Mandatory Environmental Labelling

Images of a world increasingly overwhelmed by waste of every kind have made environmental sustainability an ever more central issue in international political agendas.

With the aim of providing end consumers in Italy with clear and unequivocal instructions for identifying and disposing of packaging waste, the legislative decree that makes environmental labelling for packaging mandatory entered into force on 3 September 2020. The impact on the entire packaging supply chain is significant, and a considerable number of companies must adapt to the new legal obligations. The very broad variety of packaging and the presence of packs made of different materials can make the labelling process difficult for many companies.

The Italian government granted companies an extension to adapt and use warehouse stock until 1 January 2022. From that date onward, inspections and penalties apply to products that do not comply with the new legal provisions.
